Behold the sick sick sick skills of Zach Johnsen. I came across Zach’s work a while ago on Drawn. He inspired me.
I grew up in a small town. And in that small town my Grandpa owned some land on a creek. I spent many hours in the creek as a boy. Because of this I feel a special bond to most creek critters.
This concept would be a series of ink & watercolor pieces highlighting some of my favorite creek critters (some are not so much IN the creek but from around the wilderness of rural Missouri);
- Box turtle
- Crawdad
- Minnows
- Tadpole / Bullfrog
- Spiders
- Snapping Turtle
- Catfish, baby catfish
- Sunfish
- Rabbit
- Deer
Stylistically, I’m still not sure how I’d tackle this one, but ink & watercolor seems a good start. I recently put together some pieces similar in process in the preparation of my unborn daughter’s room.
Does this sound like a good project?

Jake-
I like the creek critter project, but then again, maybe I’m biased.
I have one point to make about your the creek critter project. That is, don’t forget the creek is a spring-fed creek. It does not, nor has it ever dried up. It flows freely rain or drought. Somehow, I really think you need to incorporate “spring-fed” into this creek critter project.

Interesting point. I do like that aspect. Water is so universal and symbolic. As a child I loved the amount and variety of LIFE that came out of Saline Creek. It was always perfect for wading, and the experiences I had exploring the gravel beds while in the water are what I connect with most. The concepts of flow, eternal, & renewal all come to mind. Thank you!
